Introduction

Hello, thank you for joining me along my journey of becoming a Runner! I've always been an active guy, played sports in high school and continued into adult recreation sports after high school. As I started my family and found a career, the activity level slowly decreased. Well my Fiance had enough of our lazy ways and started on the Weight Watchers program and completely overhauled our daily meals. Step 2 was getting more active, so we decided to JOG our annual Juvenile Diabetes charity walk and actually enjoyed the activity. The month following the charity walk, we signed up for our first official 5K and had an absolute blast. From that point forward I have officially been BIT by the running bug and this is my journey to becoming a RUNNER!

Have You Met My Running Buddy??

Long time coming, I want to introduce you all to my running buddy Buster...

Buster is a pure bred beagle and in my opinion the most beautiful dog in the world.  I wanted a beagle since I was very young and Mrs Schlub surprised me one year for my birthday.  We found a local breeder, went down to see the litter,  and we picked this guy out of about 20 puppies.

Took these just before we headed out for our recovery run today.  I have to admit, I get frustrated sometimes when we are running because Buster comes out too fast and gets gassed pretty quick, then we have a really slow pace coming back home.  BUT Buster is a total champ and truly is the best running buddy anyone can have.  He is always excited to go for a run and doesnt tell me how much of a Schlub I am when I am having a bad run.  Have yet to take him on any trail runs but I'm sure he would love to go out with me sometime.  For now we will stick to the neighborhood park and sidewalks.

What pets does everyone have??  How did you add your pet to your family??

  1. I run with my two dogs, but separately because they are a little nuts! My mini schnauzer also goes out too fast, but the only time he slowed down was when I thought it was a little cooler than it actually was and he got overheated. I've even done a few races with him. My lab mix is better at going my pace and could also keep that going forever, but she gets underfoot a lot. Either way, it's great for all of us to get out and run together!

    1. I would consider a race with buster but not sure how he would do with all the people. Definitely great for the pets to get exercise too.

  2. He is beautiful!!! What an awesome running buddy! I have a small, white bitsa puppy (bitsa this and bitsa that) and I too think SHE is the most beautiful dog in the world, haha, so Buster's got competition haha...

I've tried taking her on short runs but she is too easily distracted by trees and jerks me to a dangerous stop in order to sniff and pee on said trees. Once she came to the track with me and showed me up with her speed! But then got bored by a couple of laps in...

    1. Ha never heard bits a before. Buster started out sniffing and pulling at everything but he is much better now.

  3. ps - she came to be a beautiful part of our family as my Husband fell in love with her as we were passing a sad little pet shop here in China, and she was there in a cage, licking Husband's fingers and calling to him to rescue her and take her home.

  4. so many dogs!!! and none of them are mine. waaaaaaa!

our friends have a beagle and they love her. she wasn't the best behaved dog in the world, but we're pretty sure it was because they never tried to teach her obedience.

    1. Buster is actually pretty good. But he is never around other dogs and freaks out when they are around.

Time to get the baby a puppy lol

  5. Oh my gosh, Buster is so cute! I love hounds. I would love having a dog like him to run with. My dad had a beagle growing up named Minnie Pearl. :)

We have two bloodhounds. They can go for hours while walking, but they're not runners, so they never join me on runs. They'd rather walk and sniff/track everything anyway. We also have six chickens, although I don't really consider them pets.

    1. Wow bloodhounds, I thought buster had a bark but I'm sure those two have s set of lungs in them.

Yeah kinda tough to have chickens for pets then they are gone one day.

  6. Buster looks like a great running buddy--I think the "go out fast a furious is a beagle thing"...we had one growing up. Now we have 2 bichons, who are anything but running buddies. One will gladly go maybe 200M with you the other--forget it, she lays down--little fury princesses...They go with me for a walk after my run.

    1. Yeah he is just super excited to get out and run. You need to train those bichons do they aren't so lazy lol

  7. Hi Buster! I have a soft spot for the hounds :) I think Zoey is partially bluetick coonhound. She has the droopy ears and face. She does the same thing with running-starts out fast and then gets tired. Dogs...

    1. Yeah something about the ears I think.

Well good to know he isn't the only fast starter

  8. Buster! What a handsome little guy! I think we all like to come out of the gate a little bit too fast, you can't fault the puppy for loving to run :)

I make my cat chase me around the kitchen island in order to receive his treats. He gets one treat for every 4 laps (which I consider a cat mile). He tuckers out pretty fast though, haha.

    1. No your right, nothing wrong with that at all.

Ha great idea, luckily buster didn't need enticing, I pick up the leash and he is ready to go.

    1. I really think I need to start taking him.

I would need dog shoes with our hot weather.

  10. We have two mutts that we got from the shelter. One is getting too old for runs, but she does get walks. The younger one goes on runs with me. He has learned pretty quick not to go out too fast cause we might be going 10 miles!

  11. Buster is so cute! I am trying to picture his short little legs and ears flopping while he runs lol I miss having a dog, our girl Dinky passed away about 8 years and I just have a collection of cats now.

  12. I love that you have a running buddy! Thanks for introducing him to us! :) He seems like a good sport about it and I'm glad he never gives you a hard time about bad runs.
We probably aren't going to get a puppy this summer ~ maybe I'll push for next summer. Phoebe is WAY too old to go running with me, but our next canine friend will definitely be heading out on my runs with me.

  13. Buster is gorgeous!!! I bet he loves running with you. :) I often wish I had a dog to run with. I have 2 cats who are my BABIES but obviously they don't run with me. They do like to wait for me by the window and ambush me as soon as I walk in the door so they can lick the yummy salt off my legs. :) They love salt just like their momma!

    1. It is pretty convenient to have someone to run with at any given moment. Although its getting hot and Im worried about his paws so we will have to watch the temperatures.
